We’re back at it again with another “Buzz’N” iNterview and for this edition we have Madison, Wisconsin emcee Honest Abe.

What’s going on Abe? Let’s kick things of by letting the people know who you are & what you’re doing musically?

I’m a vocal advocate for the young, disadvantaged, working class of society. I incorporate experiences of my own personal life into the much larger picture of the future of this country. The troubles our bankers & corporations have weaved for the generations ahead while still trying to enjoy the small things in life to the fullest. My music is all about using your imagination to solve real world problems & having fun while doing it, there’s nothing like it!

Honest Abe, could you explain the reason to everyone behind the name?

I landed on the name “Honest Abe” because my real name is Jake Aberle. Back in Pardeeville, Wisconsin, where I graduated high school from, everyone gets called by their last name. Everyone knew me by Aberle or more commonly Abe. I wrote a lot of poetry and my purpose was to create an artistic sense of truth or to find the truth, the “honest” truth. I realize and embrace the fact Abraham Lincoln first claimed the “Honest Abe” nickname as I always wear a t-shirt with an exaggerated portrayal of Lincoln when I’m on stage.

So as a child, you were a member of the Madison Boy choir. Could you speak about that for a little while?

I really wish I could have been a part of the group longer but I think it gave me a dramatic advantage to fine tune my brain musically, plus the experience of having to travel to perform.

A lot of well known artists & producers have come from a church music background. do you feel that helped in your musical journey?

Yes most definitely, I had to try out for the choir witch was a lot of pressure at the age of 7. It helped me understand what it took to stand out & also be a functional gear of a much larger body.

You’ve been in Wisconsin now for awhile but also lived in Ohio & Tennessee. Did living in those different areas expose you to other aspects of music?

We moved around in accordance with my stepfather’s promotion opportunities within the company he worked for. I lived in a town of 300 people for about 1 1/2 years, pretty much limited to a cassette player and a classic hip-hop tape from the late 80’s/ early 90’s artist Tone Loc. That was until we moved to a suburb of Toledo where I was introduced to Bone Thugs & Harmony. My parents listened to heavy rock music at the time like Megadeath, Metallica, Judas Priest, etc. I grew a fond love for both of these genres. I asked mom for some blank cassette tapes while we were at the store so my best friend at the time could copy East 1999 & The Art of War because that’s what we listened to privately on the school bus. Tennessee was a dramatic change in many ways, the music most of the people listened to wasn’t something I am too fond of. I really liked the people; their attention to treating others the way they would like to be treated. Just peacefully enjoying life.

Your most recent & talked about song “Red Light Richie Rich” is making some noise locally. Could you explain the concept behind the title & meaning behind it?

The term “Red Light” is an old phrase referring to prostitution or people who “whore” themselves out for cash. My song links the facts of money and what we are willing to do for it. We all need money to survive this planetary system that was set into place many thousands of years ago. “Richie Rich” was an old comic book & cartoon from the 50’s about an obscenely rich tween who didn’t have to work a day in his life. Going from one side of the spectrum to the other & finding some common ground through all the contrasts of what it takes for a young poor person to become rich in such a harsh economy full of heartless competition.

Are you currently working on an upcoming project? What’s next for Honest Abe?

My next project is devising a marketing plan for my first self invested album and possible tour. Gaining a merchandising platform & just making my message more accessible to like minded individuals who are also trying to make positive social changes promoting more human equality than ignorant inequality.

Sounds like you’re in the right mindset Abe. Name some Artists/Producers you would like to work with in the future.

You know, realistically or not, local producer DJ Pain 1 is someone I’d like to work with for his undisputed knowledge & execution from our humble MadCity. Also not so local producer Micheal “Seven” Summers, who is Tech N9ne’s producer, would be awesome to have involved in the Honest Abe movement. People not afraid to do things a bit differently which is what this current industry desperately needs. But as far as artists go, realistically or not, it would be the main artists I listen to which is Rittz, Tech N9ne, Yelawolf, Mayday & Stevie Stone. On a local level, I see hard work ethics in Sincere Life & Tef Man. They have committed to the community to see positive change in their lives and the lives of those in our city through Hip-hop. True soldiers of the genre.

That’s what’s up, interesting choices. Abe, where all can we find you online?

Lastly, care to give any shout outs?

I would like to give special shout out first of all to my mom for buying me my first microphone & interface back in high school & for believing in me. Without her I wouldn’t have been able to vent on the tracks in the first place. Club Inferno & Midwest Mix-Up for giving Abe a stage with eyes & ears to comprehend & get involved. Last but not at all least, my true friends & family for all the amazing support throughout the years coming to shows, buying t-shirts & spreading my name from person to person. You make my life so special and for that I am infinitely grateful.

Honest Abe is poised & determined to establish himself onto the hip hop scene. Stay tuned to GYBU and to Abe’s social media sites for more from the Madison emcee.
