(Album Review)-@DARQBXKID “Back 2 Risk It”

Bronx, New York recording artist Darq Raw has got a huge album on his hands with “Back 2 Risk It”. The offering consists of 16 tracks with features from G.Fisher, Amy Davis, Naza, D Dave, Mr.Gat, R.E.A.L., Bugz, Elus, Reed Dollaz, Sinsay, Unica and Rsonist of the Heatmakers. From just a single listen, one can conclude that Darq is a force to be reckoned with in a time of one hit wonders, recycled formats and watered down content. Darq’s voice draws a close comparison to Canibus but one doesn’t need a dictionary to decipher the lyrical content. The production is a strong mix of hip hop and hard rock with a splash of soul. So let’s get into “Back 2 Risk It”.

Off the jump, we hear the Amy Davis assisted “Save Me” where Raw speaks on his upbringing and rebirth as Dark Raw. The synthesized guitar and piano arps are sick on this one. “Don’t It” will draw comparisons to Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life” with its show tune sample. The song is a feel good anthem for all to not give up and keep pushing forward. On “Get a Win”, Darq & Mr. Gat address the haters and piss them off by posting a W. Raw states no matter what he does it’s never “Good Enough” alongside R.E.A.L. on track 4. “Runnin Out Of Time” is an anxiety driven record touching on how short life is and fuses Van Halens “Ain’t Talkin Bout Love” within it, a dope record.

Amy Davis lends her vocal talents once again to “Still Rising”; a deep contemplation record that any listener should be able to relate to. The super soulful, Mystro produced “Hello” is another standout track in which Raw explains his feelings on his everyday dealings. Another rock infused banga, “These Moments”, finds the emcee speaking on pivotal moments throughout his musical career. We’re then blessed with his lead off single from the project, “Cross Em off the List”, a true New York hip hop anthem.

Raw then digs in the crates and offers up his rendition to Metallica’s classic record on “One” and ends up creating a classic story telling hit. This is another standout track on the album. “Welcome Aboard” carries an old school emcee concept to it and the tommy gun like hi hats set up a nice pattern for the duo to spit over. No album could be complete without a hood anthem and Raw pitches in “Go Hard” to fill that slot. Bugz & G Fisher join Darq on the soulfully chilling “The World That We Live In” and offer their take on the world of today. Rsonist and Sinsay also join Raw on “Crazy Place” and flow effortlessly over the wailing female vocal samples.

“Dear Music” is Raw’s letter to hip hop and is a heartfelt production full of Rhodes chords, high pitched choir ahs and a wonderfully sung hook provided by Unica. On the bonus cut “Ahh Man” we get that Bronx, New York bullshit we seldom hear these days that will have you swerving thru the street, wilding out in the whip, blasting it full volume on repeat, my personal favorite.

“Back 2 Risk It” is a solid release from Darq that solidifies him as a force to be reckoned with musically. The album combines a mixture of genres (Hip Hop, Rock, Soul) all while Raw keeps his format fitted to express his feelings and opinions. The listeners will tell right out the gate that this project wasn’t crafted to be pop or mended to fit today’s so called formats. It’s for those that enjoy music that expresses who and what the artist’s feeling were during that period and Darq Raw pulls it off perfectly.
